Tulane University, originally the Medical College of Louisiana, was founded in 1834. In 1847 the college became part of the newly established University of Louisiana. Loyola University, chartered in 1912, was founded by the Jesuits, Catholic priests who were among the first settlers to the region. In 1996, Loyola University became Loyola University New Orleans to distinguish it from other institutions of the same name. This private, coeducational university is home to about 5,000 students, 3,000 being undergraduates. The main campus is located in the Uptown neighborhood, close to the French Quarter. Loyola University New Orleans is the largest Catholic University in the United States. Specializing in liberal arts, sciences and professions, colleges include the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, College of Social Sciences, College of Business, College of Music and Fine Arts and the College of Law.
